Community
Anthony James (Park & Recreation) Mr. James is an Assistant Center
Director at the Double Oaks Recreation Center and a manager of the
Charlotte Flights Track and Field Club. It is for his work with
the Charlotte Flights that Mr. James was nominated. Mr. James spends
a significant amount of time working with the youth as both a coach
and role model. His passion for providing a meaningful track program
for children to learn discipline, self-esteem, and teamwork is unmatched.
Furthermore, Mr. James strives to develop relationships with outside
organizations such as Johnson C. Smith University and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Police Athletic League to get community support for the Charlotte
Flights team. By taking the extra steps to help these children,
Mr. James represents the County's commitment to provide positive
recreational alternatives in pursuit of a Livable Community.
Carroll
on Track to Set National Record
Brittany Carroll bested the national record time of 29.14 held by
Cambrya Jones in the 200 meter dash for a nine year old, with a
time of 28.43. Since national age group records can only be set
at a national championship, she is on pace to break it at the AAU
National Junior Olympics at the end of this month. She also won
the 100 meter dash and anchored the winning 4 by 100 meter relay.
Carroll also holds the national record in the 200 meter dash in
the primary girls, 8 and under, age-group with a mark of 30.91.
Spectacular
First Pentathlon for Wentz
Taryn Wentz won gold the pentathlon, 100 long jump hurdles and the
100 meter hurdles in the sub midget girls division, 11 year olds.
Competing in her first pentathlon which combines the long jump,
high jump, shot put, 200 meter dash and 800 meter run events, she
amassed 2585 points, just 29 points of the national record. Also,
her winning long jump of 15 feet 8 inches is only 1 inch off the
national record.
White
Soars Above Pharr
Ronda White, Charlotte Observer's High School Women Athlete of the
Year and the nation's second ranked triple jumper, soared to another
top five in the nation mark with a leap of 41 feet 1.25 inches to
defeat the nation's tenth ranked triple jumper, LaTasha Pharr from
the Rowan Express. These two battled it out with one of the best
performances this year in the long jump with White winning with
a jump of 19 feet 8.5 inches.' White also earned a bronze medal
in the heptathlon.
Jones
Wins the Gold
Brandon Jones won gold medals in the 800 meter and 1500 meter runs
with times of 2:10.53 and 4:31.28 respectively in the youth boy's
division, 13 to 14 year olds. He also participated on the 4 by 800
team which placed fourth.
Team
News
CFTFC athletes earned gold medals in 22 events and 66 medals overall.
Eighty-seven athletes earned the right to compete at the AAU National
Junior Olympics in Orlando, Florida from 28 July to 5 August 2000.
A top four performance was required for individuals and team relays
to advance the Junior Olympics.
