Charlotte Flights Track & Field Club Nets 4 Records-11 National Champions-46 medals At AAU Junior Olympics

CF athletes capped off another great season with 4 national records, 11 national champions and 46 medals in 30 at the AAU National Junior Olympics Track and Field Championships in Norfolk Virginia from July 28 to August 4, 2001. CF's 70 athletes, one of the largest contingents, earned their way to the Olympics by finishing in the top four at the five state AAU regional championship last month in Savannah.

Four CF athletes set or tied national AAU records. Taylor Hancock, 7, and Brandon Jones, 13, led the way with a national AAU record and three gold medals. Hancock set the primary boys mark in the 400 meters with a time of 1:06.52 and he also won gold in the 100 and 200 meters with times of 14.32 and 29.65. At the spotlight event of the opening ceremonies Jones set the youth boys (13-14) record blazing to a 1:58.97 finish. He also won the 1500 meters with a time of 4:15.88 and anchored the 3200-meter relay to gold.

Not to be outdone, two CF girls made their mark on the AAU record book. Jasmine Isley, 11, set posted a time of 12.80 in the sub-midget girls 80-meter hurdles and copper, 8th, in the 400-meter relay. Taryn Wentz, 12, tied the midget girls national mark in the long jump with a 17" 3 ½" leap. She also earned gold in the pentathlon, while earning silver in the high jump (4' 8") and copper, 6th, in the 80-meter hurdles.

Other gold medal performers included Brandon Key, 7, winning the primary boys long jump with a bound of 12' 7," and Antonio Guy, 14, who netted 2718 point to win the youth boys pentathlon. While William Scott, Nigel Orr, Michael Edwards and Brandon Jones, 13-14, surged to come from behind victory in the youth boys 3200-meter relay team with a time of 8:42.98. Earning bronze included Shamaya Poe, 15, in the youth girls 100 meters with a time of 12.19; the youth girls 400 meter squad of Poe, Jessika Gresham, Janell Joyner and Aisha Lide (15-16) clocking 47.95; and the bantam boys 400 meter relay team of Sedric Little, Larry Kennedy and Davion Waters (10) posting 55.09.

Other highlights of the CF season include dominating several developmental meets, the Jim Law Invitational Track Meet as team winners, AAU State meet advancing 166 athletes; winning the Blunt East Coast Invitational, earning runner up honors at the Region III Championship.

AAU Junior Olympics awards medals to all 8 finalists in each event. The first 3 places receive gold, silver and bronze, while places 4 through 8 receive copper medals.
